Primary Origin

Primary origin is the site in the body where melanoma first arose. This information is relevant because depending on the site of origin, melanomas may harbor different mutations that can ultimately influence choice of treatments.

Eye melanoma: This tool focuses on uveal melanoma, the most common type of ocular melanoma.

Acral/Mucosal melanoma: This melanoma originates on parts of the body that are not typically exposed to sunlight such as palms, soles, under the nails and in mucosal membranes of various organs.

Metastatic Sites

These are secondary sites that melanoma has spread to from its primary origin. Information about the size and location of metastasis can impact choice of treatments. For example, active brain metastases often disqualify patients from participating in clinical trials.

Mutation Information

Genetic mutations can contribute to melanoma growth. This tool uses mutational status to help identify potentially relevant therapies.

The BRAF gene is commonly mutated in melanomas that have originated in the skin.

The C-KIT gene is mutated in a small percentage of melanomas that have originated in the skin.

The GNAQ and GNA11 genes are frequently mutated in melanomas that have originated in the eye.

Several drugs that target these genes are in clinical trials for melanoma.
